the regular time. I think 3-5 years is a very good time to go through the program for the first time. (Maybe your order doesn't agree with mine LOL.) The official guidelines say to start within two years of the transition, or no later than 365 days before the transition period.
Spouses should also participate if possible. A partner has different questions than a service member, and remembers different information tools. Additionally, reviewing the material covered each day is a good conversation starter about how you want things to unfold.
According to DOD Directive 1352.1, retired members may be recalled to active duty for the remainder of their lives. If you have been retired for 5+ years, or are over 65, it is quite possible. If you have the opportunity, start planning whether you will take the vacation at the end or sell your extra vacation.
You may also receive 20-day TDY authorization for transitional purposes. Check if this is something your order allows. If you don't already have adequate post-military coverage, start looking at your service member and spouse life insurance options.
In The Years Following Military Separation
Get this done as soon as possible - don't wait until you start military and disability medical procedures, and definitely don't wait until you leave the military. You cannot make good decisions about VGLI until you know whether or not you are insured in the civilian market.

If you receive additional VA disability benefits because you have children, you must provide appropriate documentation when they turn 18. You can continue to receive benefits for them until they are 23 and in school full time.
Additional benefits apply if the VA disability rating is 30% or more. Keep in mind, however, that you will generally not receive additional payments for your children and receive VA education benefits. Make sure everything is properly regulated every year.

Expect to be contacted by representatives from the VA's Solid Start program. They will try to contact you several times by phone 90, 180, and 365 days after the breakup. The purpose of this program is to ensure that every veteran knows about the benefits of the VA.
Start thinking about what life will be like after the military. Talk to your spouse, if you have one. This is an ongoing conversation that includes many factors: jobs, weather, personal preferences, schools, access to military supplies, etc.
