In the early 1800s, before the War of 1812, Commodore Edward Preble banned the use of coffins for sailors in the Navy below a sergeant. The first sea bag was painted black. Of course, digging below decks at night was a sailor's nightmare.

The Classic Military Duffle Bag

They try to put luggage between the bag and the hammock to make it easier to find things at night. Decades later, in the 1900's, this technique was known as "Lash-up". Black Sea bags are made of linen linen and come in 42" and 18" diameters.

By the early 1900's, sea packs were changing from black to white, and the "Lash-up" became a tradition. The white sea bag is 36 inches less in height and 12 inches in diameter. Just like today, the sea bags back then had no straps, but were marked with the sailor's name and number.

When the reveille was called, the sailors had to remove the hammocks from the hooks, pack their bedding and get dressed. In the 1930s, ships phased out hammocks and fitted ships with racks. These bags are initially impregnated with water-repellent chemicals, which can produce an unpleasant smell.

It's durable, has great shoulder straps, and is deceptively roomy. Sometimes troops would write on it where they had been. That old salty look is a badge of honor for a body—as long as it's not unusable.

The evolution of the sea bag can be traced back to when it was not a bag. From humble beginnings in clothing and bedding, to today's classic backpacks, this trusted apparel company has always had the military behind it.

In the Vietnam era in the 1970s, the sea bag had a new innovation in the form of the shoulder strap, now made of nylon. New functional improvements allow sailors to comfortably carry the sea bag like a backpack.

The military is inventing and always reinventing the way troops use equipment. Through trial and error, the military considers how equipment affects readiness. No matter how the sea bag evolves in the future, one thing is for sure, we will always love our sea bag.

The bag will contain the same gear as before, such as bedding and uniforms. However, the new design takes into account the space created by eliminating the hammock. Instead, a new space is added for the mattress.

The new packs were issued only to recruits and were not widely adopted throughout the Navy due to ALNAV 278-45, which eliminated the need for sailors to have personal mattresses. It is complemented by shoulder straps, external pockets and a locking system, still used today in olive green sea bags.

You can almost feel the relief sailors of this era now have in a lighter, safer sea bag. I got my first USGI bag when I became a US Marine at Boot Camp at Parris Island.

We affectionately call them sea bags. My original sea bag went through hell in the Marine Corps. It travels the world with me, on sea, in the air, and of course on land. I still own and use the original sea bag that I show off in the video review below.

The fact that this bag is so durable might be reason enough to include it in your survival kit or bag. I've used this bag when camping with NTC members, from heavy gun training bags to bear bags.

I'm sure if you decide to own one of these bags, you'll find countless uses for it. Local storage appears to be disabled in your browser. For the best experience on our website, be sure to turn on local storage in your browser.
